10. Metallica – Enter Sandman

Whether they’re a guilty pleasure or an iTunes favourite, Metallica are always good for a guitar heavy intro to get you going. This crescendo will get your blood racing for you to attack your workout. Hit the weights and “say you’re prayers, little one”.

9. Kanye West – Amazing

This is enough to boost anyone’s ego. On those freezing winter nights this song’s lyrics will give your self-esteem such a boost that, without sounding like Facejacker’s “amazing” scouser Ray Fakadakis, you’ll be bursting with confidence.

Kanye West.

8. Tinie Tempah – Pass Out

Tinie’s monster hit from 2010 will be on pretty much every workout playlist since it debuted. But we just couldn’t ignore it. The pumping beat along with the tagline “we can do this until we pass out” ensured it made it onto our list. Whether you’re from Southampton or Scunthorpe, this song will definitely get you into the zone.

7. Arctic Monkeys – From Ritz to the Rubble

We’ve all been there, ridiculed and rejected by the totalitarian bouncer. Don’t let him make an example of you, get yourself back into the gym and make him fear you. Bouncers are hardly keepers of the peace, more the catalyst for trouble. Wind yourself up by recognising yourself in the song, work out and show that bouncer whose boss.

6. Chase & Status – Hypest Hype

You listened to these guys drop this with Tempa T in 2011, and lets be honest you didn’t quite get it. For those of you who don’t know, a “next hype”, which Tempz is on in this song, is something that’s going to be the next big thing. Essentially it’s what the human race has been craving for 250,000 years; one-up-man-ship.  Be that guy who is on the next hype. Get yourself looking good and make people turn their heads. This song along with it’s typically Chase and Status beat will help you get there.

5. Limp Bizkit – Break Stuff

“It’s just one of those days” and you need to let off some steam. If this song comes on before your workout it will give you at least 20% more effort. After hearing this all you want to do is just cause havoc. However, just let Limp Bizkit inspire you. Back in 1999 when Limp where at the height of their popularity, rowdy teenagers inherited this as their anarchy anthem. However, rather than causing havoc and breaking things, channel this anger and frustration into your workout and see the results. If this doesn’t get you pumped, then, seek help.

4. Eminem – Lose Yourself

By all accounts, this is Eminem’s pièce de résistance. This biographical epic from the Detroit rapper gives you an insight into his hardships achieving his dreams. The theme to his bio-pic, “8 Mile”, this song became definitive of Eminem’s rise to the top of the rap game in the early 21st century. He compliments his very personal lyrics with a beat that teases the flow of adrenaline. Put this track on, listen to the lyrics and apply them to yourself. Forget the outside influences and judgemental eyes. It’s all up to you. “Lose yourself” in the moment and smash that workout, whether it’s cold or not.

3. Chemical Brothers – Galvanize

Despite only reaching number three in the singles chart, this song was huge. The punchy beat and funky video was around for weeks and shot the Chemical Brothers back in the limelight. So, you’re bored, sat on your sofa and watching the nights draw in. You sigh and flick the TV on. Nothing but reality talent shows who’s only aim seems to be diluting the meaning of a standing ovation. You flick this playlist on and this track. The lyrics start and it may as well be your conscious telling you to get pumped. The repetition of “don’t hold back” will stir you and haul yourself of that sofa and into the gym. “GALVANIZE!”

2. Daft Punk – Harder, Better, Faster

This original has beaten the Kanye West version to number two on our list. The Chi-Town rapper’s version nearly got the nod but we’ve gone for our friend’s from across the channel, Daft Punk. Pretty much the staple tune that is played in gyms across the globe, this tune is sure to get you pumped. This track cleverly combines a beat that encourages movement, but the lyrics are the main reason it gets to number two. “Work it harder, make it better, do it faster”

Daft Punk in 2006.

1. Black Sabbath – Iron Man

The eerily solo drum intro accompanied by a Dalek style “I am Iron Man” builds up tension in this Ozzy Osbourne and co. classic. The iconic guitar intro, brought to a new generation thanks to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, now has connotations of power, strength and style. That coupled with Sabbath’s typically heavy tunes will make you want to become your own Iron Man. If you aren’t going to play this song loud, then don’t include it in your playlist. Get it on, get it to eleven and be Iron Man.

Top 5 Non-League Strikers

Non-League football is real football.  Here’s The Programme’s countdown of the five best stikers outside of the Football League:

5. Jake Speight – Mansfield Town

Mansfield striker, Jake Speight

In recent years, Jake Speight has been one of the most prolific stikrers outside of the Football League.

A product of his boyhood club Sheffield United, Speight didn’t quite cut it at the South Yorkshire club and, after a failed spell at Bury early in his career, he quickly realised that he would have to ply his trade in the lower league.

He first began to make headlines when he was at his first spell for Mansfield Town, were he scored 17 league goals in 33 league appearances  This superb Blue Square form gave Speight the confidence to try his trade in the Football League once more, this time with Bradford City.

Another Yorkshire club, another failure. After a year with the Banthams he was back in the Blue Square with Wrexham.

After firing them up the table with a superb 21 goal return last season, Speight was rewarded with a move back to Mansfield Town.

He is an intelligent striker that works well with Mansfield’s direct style. Certainly one of the best in the non-league.

4. Matthew Barnes-Homer – Macclesfield Town

Matt Barnes-Homer for Macclesfield

At only 26, Matthew Barnes-Homer seems to have been everywhere. The gangly forward has been to three different countries to ply his trade and earn a living but finally seems settled at Macclesfield.

Signing for the Cheshire side in June, after playing in second highest league in Sweden for Östersunds FK, Barnes-Homer has hit the ground running.

Racing to twelve league goals from 20 appearances this year he is showing that he has the quality to be considered on of the league’s best strikers.

Starting his career for Wolverhampton, Barnes-Homer would have had ambitions of playing in front of big crowds in the football league.

If he keeps his form and carries on utlising his abilities of finishing mixed with hold-up play, he may play there just yet. Whether it be Macclesfield or someone else.

Watch this space.

3. Tom Elliott – Cambridge United

At 22, Tom Elliott is one of non-league football’s hottest prospects. The striker has scored an impressive eleven league goals this season from just 17 appearances.

Elliott first made an impression on the league when he signed for Stockport County in August 2011, at just 20 years-old. There he quickly became a fan’s favourite as he was County’s joint top goal scorer with eight.

Despite being offered a new deal by Stockport, Elliott decided to move to Cambridge United. Here Elliott has really come into his own as the club’s main goal threat. With a style of play that utilises his pace and finishing abilities the young striker is flourishing at his new club.

Described by Cambridge boss, Jez George, as “A player with a bright future and has that ability of always being a threat”. Elliott is fastly becoming one of the best prospects in the lower leagues, not just non-league. And at just 22 who knows what the future holds. The Football League maybe just round the corner.

2. Aaron O’Connor – Newport County

Aaron O’Connor celebrating with his Newport team-mates

Aaron O’Connor has quite simply been this season’s revelation. With 14 league goals from 18 league starts he has started this campaign like a seasoned striker.

The form that he has shown at this stage in the season made it almost impossible for him not to be named as number one in our list.

However, O’Connor hasn’t always enjoyed plaudits such as these. Born in Nottingham, the 29 year-old had spells at Scunthorpe, Grays, Mansfield, Rushden & Diamonds, and Luton.

His only prolific success coming in the Northern Premier League at a speall at Gresley Rovers between 2004 and 2007.

But O’Connor has really come into his own in South Wales. He compliments his pace with a blistering shot which has added to his stock in the Blue Square Premier League.

If he manages to keep up this form then, come next season, expect to see the names Newport County and Aaron O’Connor in the football league.

1. Matt Green – Mansfield Town

Green for Mansfield Town

As far as non-League football goes, there are no strikers who have the same track record as this guy. It’s simple, in the league he scores.

A youth product of Bristol City and an England school boy international, Green started his professional career as an 18 year-old with Newport County. His accomplished performances there saw him move across South Wales to giants, Cardiff City.

Despite much promise Green failed to deliver for the bluebirds and went back to the non-league with Torquay United, after a successful loan spell back in the Conference with Oxford United.

But it is with Oxford where Green gained his reputation as one of the leagues deadliest strikers. His ability to score different goals from different situations makes him invaluable at this level of football.

Green’s goals were one of the main reasons why Oxford gained promotion back into the football league, via the play-offs, in 2010. Though while he became deadly and feared in the Conference, he still found the adjustment to league football difficult and found himself back in the Blue Square with Mansfield Town.

With a new found life in East Midlands and back in the league he knows, it clicked for Green last season. He finished as the league’s top scorer with 29 goals and was considered one of the league’s best performers throughout the whole campaign.

Despite his goalscoring prowess, Green’s disciplinary record leaves much to be desired. He was sent off in the play-off semi-final which some people believe cost Mansfield the chance of promotion. However, others say that his desire and willingness for the team sometimes lets his emotions get the better of him.

Though he has only found the net on five occasions this year, Green is certain that his team can help him reach the same heights as last year.

“There are good players around me as well and when they do get the ball they look for me all the time, which makes my job a lot easier”.

A charmingly modest answer from the most deadly striker outside of the football league.
